The Life of the Virgin by John Geometres

Updated: Aug 14, 2022

The third meditation in a series of videos leading up to the Dormition of the Mother of God (August 15) features text from the Life of the Virgin Mary, written by the tenth century poet and theologian, John Geometres. A new translation of this work, alongside a new critical edition of the Greek text, is currently at press (to appear in early Spring 2023). It is the work of Christos Simelides, a member of the Board of the Pappas Patristic Institute, and our own Director, Fr Maximos Constas.

Here, Geometres focuses on the special role of the Mother of God in the celestial work of Christ, beginning with her son's unique descent to retrieve his virgin mother from this world and enthrone her in his heavenly kingdom as our universal intercessor and mother.
