The New Website of the Pappas Patristic Institute

Updated: Dec 23, 2021

Mullany Gallery Chi Rho Roundel Pappas Patristic Institute

Welcome to the new website of the Pappas Patristic Institute. Among the first things you will notice on our site is the late-antique roundel of the Chi Rho (left) featured on our site's banner. The Chi Rho is one of the earliest forms of a Christogram, made by superimposing the first two (capital) letters, chi and rho, of the Greek word XPICTOC. On either side of the Chi Rho are the Greek letters Α and ω, from Revelation 1:8, I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

This outstanding carving, dated to the 5th or 6th century, comes from the Mullany Gallery in London, which has kindly given permission for this image to be used here for educational purposes. You may wish to visit the Mullany Gallery's website here (and be sure to visit their Instagram page, which showcases beautiful images of their pieces).
