St Augustine and the Greek Patristic Tradition

On Tuesday, June 15, 2022, Dr Tikhon Pino, Assistant Director of the Pappas Patristic Institute was invited to speak at an event hosted by His Grace Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos and the St Photios National Shrine in St Augustine, Florida. Dr Pino's presentation was entitled, "One of the Wise and Apostolic Men: St Augustine as a Source of Orthodox Theology in Byzantium."

Though aimed at a general audience, the presentation draws on some of the most important research on the legacy of St Augustine in the Greek-speaking world, particularly in the writings of St Gregory Palamas.

The online event was hosted by the Department of Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. It featured a response from Rev. John Sollee of the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine, FL.

The webinar is part of an annual double observance of the feast of St Augustine shared between the Saint Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint Augustine, FL. Both Orthodox Christians and Roman Catholics celebrate the memory of the prolific theologian of the fourth century, Saint Augustine of Hippo, albeit on different days. On August 28, 2022, the observance of the saint’s memory in the Roman Catholic Church, the Diocese of Saint Augustine, FL will reciprocate in events as yet to be determined.

The Pappas Patristic Institute is grateful to Bishop Demetrios for the invitation. This video recording is also available on the Facebook page of the St Photios National Shrine.
