On the evening of October 23, 2024, the Pappas Patristic Institute was pleased to co-host a lecture alongside the Huffington Ecumenical Institute, one of our sister institutes at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. The discussion, led by Douglas E. Christie, centered on night (and darkness) in the lives and spirituality of the early desert ascetics. Dr Christie, a scholar of Early Christianity, is best known for his books, The Word in the Desert: Scripture and the Quest for Holiness in Early Christian Monasticism (Oxford, 1993) and The Blue Sapphire of the Mind: Notes for a Contemplative Ecology (Oxford, 2012).
